August 2026 Special Election Statement
The night of August 4 brought a lot to celebrate for the Mid-Missouri Democratic Socialists of America. Within minutes of polls closing, Amendments 4 & 5 were announced as losers. Defeated in every county statewide, and each capturing only 20% of the statewide vote, these billionaire schemes were resoundingly rejected by Missourians.
Mid-Missouri DSA, which knocked nearly 2,000 doors in Columbia for the campaign to oppose these amendments, could not be more proud of the work we did in collaboration with our allies statewide to defeat these deceptive and damaging attempts to undermine majority rule and pick the pockets of the working class.
We also knocked hundreds of doors for our endorsed candidates for local office in the weeks leading up to the election. Our local endorsed candidates are important as a continuation of our chapter's proven ability to win power at the local level, and we commit ourselves to true commitments toward their election, not just paper endorsements.
We congratulate our endorsed candidate for city council, Sharon Jones, who won the Fourth Ward seat by an impressive 13 points, capturing 51% of the vote. She now joins our previously endorsed candidate, Vera Elwood of the Second Ward, on the council. We look forward to supporting them in creating a progressive majority on the council and working toward policies and reforms that will benefit working-class Columbians.
We also wish to thank our candidate for Associate Judge, Spencer Smith, for his work and commitment. Spencer ran a principled, progressive campaign for office rooted in a commitment to defending democracy and promoting true equality under the law. He knocked on thousands of doors and met with voters and stakeholders across the county. With no major financial backing and opposed by the entrenched establishment in Boone County, Spencer garnered over 7,000 votes county-wide. We were proud to stand with Spencer, and thank him for running proudly as a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. We look forward to continued work with him as a member of our chapter and a strong left voice in our community.
The Mid-Missouri Democratic Socialists of America are proud to fight for the candidates and causes that will bring lasting change, progress, and equality to our community. We commit ourselves to continuing this vital electoral work in the future, as we work to build a Boone County, Missouri, and nation by, of, and for the working class.
